Monstrous Desires
A revenant, a vampire, a grave-fae, a crossroads devil, a thing behind the glass. Every one of them wants you, and every one of them names its price before it touches you.
A wet copper spins on the cobbles at your feet, then another, out of the sealed well. A drowned coachman hauls himself over the lip and asks you to meet the coaches in his name. In the Mirror Hall, a reflection steps out to finish its last dance. On the Yew Walk, a tree asks for one season of your sleep.
Monstrous Desires is a d100 book of monster romance for the season of the dead. Each roll is a creature that wants the PC: forty partners read masculine, forty feminine and twenty shifting, across ten families of the uncanny. It is set in the haunted corners of Velnaris during Hallowtide, when the city lights its graves, and it carries no stat blocks, so it drops into any dark-fantasy city at any time of year.
The Pact
Nothing in this book takes what it is not given. Each creature says what it wants, in its own voice and before anything happens: a year, a name, a memory, a promise kept in the dead's name. The PC agrees knowing the cost, or does not.
The pact buys a favour, not the scene. Whether a scene happens at all is settled by a check-in the creature asks on the page, and the GM asks again at the table. A no ends the scene, and the creature accepts it.
Anatomy of an Encounter
- Read to the table — the moment, ready to read aloud.
- The creature — what it is, a flash of who it was, and what it wants.
- The pact — its price, quoted in its own voice, against the favour it gives.
- Four branches — the PC accepts and stays, pays and leaves, bargains or refuses. Each one is a real outcome.
- If the full price was paid — what the price leaves behind.
- World, Sign, Aftermath — a custom of the haunted city, the tell that something is near, and what the night leaves behind.
What's Inside
- 100 creatures, 100 pacts, indexed 00–99, one encounter to a page
- Ten families of the uncanny, each band naming what its creatures take: the Returned, the Thirsting, the Lingering, the Grave Gentry, the Crossroads, the Shed Skins, the Mirrored, Rot & Bloom, Made Things and the Deep
- A haunted gazetteer of twelve places, from the Lantern Yard and Saint Ysolde's Acre to the Mirror Hall and the Wax House
- Five chains (The Toll-Box in the Well, The Duchess's Will, The Bought Oath, The Mirror Hall's Last Ball, The Treaty With the Deep), each threading three encounters that still work alone
- Four appendices: pacts by band and price, the gazetteer, the chains, and a finder by place and by partner
- A compact d100 lookup, the whole book on a few pages
Content & Safety
18+. The accept branches are written on the page, with the act and the bodies named. Fading to black is always a table option: read the pact, then skip to what the price leaves behind. The text never sets the PC's gender or anatomy. Every partner is an adult, alive and aware during the scene, and able to speak; every accept branch carries a check-in in the creature's own voice, and refusing is always a full outcome. Session-zero the register, use lines & veils and a visible X-card, and honor a skip immediately, no reason owed.
