Knives of Velnaris — 100 Dark-Fantasy Underworld Encounters

The pickpocket's mark, the smuggler's crate, the blackmailer's letter, the contract nobody signs.

A halfling cutpurse presses a stolen signet into your palm, mouths one word, hold, and vanishes between the spice carts. A registrar slides a sealed letter across her counter while boots stop outside and do not knock.

What You Roll

A d100 table of underworld scenes (theft, smuggling, protection, forgery, poison, blackmail) where the crime is happening now, with the PCs standing in the middle of it. Take the coup, oppose it, or walk away: every branch carries a price.

Each card is one 6×9 spread built for a GM with thirty seconds. The left page is the scene: a read-aloud, the NPC with an opening move and what they want, how to run it (the lever, the clocks, named 5e checks from DC 9 to DC 17) and three branches: Take, Oppose, Walk. The right page is the city around it (city law, a street rumor, the sign, the complication, the heat, the aftermath) and a full 5e 2024 stat block for the one opponent the PCs would fight.

Also Inside

  • 100 stat blocks, CR 1/4 to CR 5, scaled by the second die, across the peoples of Velnaris: humans, dwarves, halflings, elves, drow, tieflings, aasimar, and the city's own Avidin, Cendrin, Votary and Veillant
  • A ten-band grid keyed to places in Velnaris, from the Crossings to the Consulate
  • Five recurring factions (Magpie-and-Loom, Sharkmouth, the Ninth Bell, the Quiet Garden, the Paper Kings) so favors and grudges carry from scene to scene
  • Six underworld arcs of three linked rolls each
  • Four appendices: an index by faction, place and crime type; a Concordance; a gazetteer of thirty places; the five factions at a glance
  • A one-table d100 lookup, shipped as a separate sheet

Who It's For

GMs running urban campaigns who want crime as a live choice rather than a mystery to solve later. The checks are 5e-scaled; in another system, read the CR as a threat tier. Rename a place and roll.

Content

Table-safe, dark but non-explicit. Theft, coercion, blackmail and murder-for-hire are the subject matter, but there is no graphic gore and no sexual content. The book opens with an X-card note and a list of themes a table may want warned of.
